Navigating Uncertainty: 7 Ways To Grow In The Face of The Unknown

As we begin to take on bigger things in our lives, make purposeful changes, or navigate something completely new, we can face uncertainty. Today we're sharing our favorite ways to grow through what we go through.

What Do You Really Need Right Now?

There is no shortage of advice about how to make use of our time. Nearly everywhere we look someone’s offering a new webinar or online cooking or exercise course.

And those things are amazing in their own ways!

At the same time, what we in the Hot Mess Tribe noticed was lacking, is support as you grow throughout this challenging time.

So today, rather than suggest specific classes to take or training to do, we want to provide you with 7 ways to navigate the uncertainty.

That way, when you find yourself navigating any uncertain time, you have our tribe and these tips to support you as you do.

So let’s get to it!

Tip 1: Acknowledge How You Really Feel

One of the toughest things to do right now is to be honest with ourselves about how we’re feeling.

So many voices are coming at us and sending us messages that we should be worried, grateful, productive, brave and so many other things.

But what really matters is how we feel and how we want to feel.

So, we encourage you to take some time to explore how you’re feeling, beyond the noise and demands of life right now.

When you can get really clear about how you feel you’ll have a great deal more bandwidth to tackle the uncertainty that lies before you because you’ll be fully present with yourself.

Tip 2: Remind Yourself of How Resilient You’ve Been

When the unknown is all there is, it can be tough to feel like we have the power to do anything or to make any real change in our lives.

One way to combat this feeling is to remind ourselves, every day if we have to, just how powerful and phenomenal we are.

When we remember how much we’ve been through and how we navigated uncertainty before and rocked it, we begin to connect with that power within us. We never lose it, but it helps to be reminded of it as we step into the unknown.

Tip 3: Understand How You Typically Respond To The Unknown

One of the most important things we can do is to recognize our typical patterns.

When navigating challenging times, it can be helpful to be honest about how we normally handle uncertainty.

Do we scroll social media for hours? Get cold with our partner? Make impulsive decisions? Stop eating well or exercising? Try to do everything to make others feel better? We might find that some of the things we typically do are helpful while others are not. Once we identify our habits we can consciously decide whether we want to keep them or change them. We can empower ourselves to make the right decisions for us.

Tip 4: Ask Yourself The Right Questions

One habit that can help you navigate uncertainty is asking yourself helpful questions.

It can be a challenge to know where to start but here are some quick examples of subtle shifts you can use to shape your self-talk into something positive, powerful, and helpful to you during a challenging situation.

“Why can’t I…?” can become “How can I…?”

“Why is this happening to me?” can become “What part of this is happening for me?”

“How will I ever… again?” can become “What do I want to do next?”

As you shift to ask yourself more empowering questions, you’ll see a shift in your mindset that will prepare you for whatever comes your way.

Tip 5: Find Peace In Patience With Yourself and The World

This one comes right from our Hot Mess owner and leader, Tara.

“Find peace in patience, take some time to read that book you’ve been looking at for the last 6 months. Learn how to play chess or start a business plan.

Social media is such a great way to learn a new skill, It’s also a way to connect with someone amazing you admire and always wished you had the time to craft the perfect direct message to… Get to know yourself, be kind to your fellow humans, get creative. Let’s use this incredible gift of time to look inside ourselves, be inspired, or just bake cookies with your kids.”

Tip 6: Focus on What You Can Control

It can be easy and natural to focus on all of the things that you can’t control as you go through a time of uncertainty. But one way to combat this is to focus your attention on what you can control.

Where can you make changes, make decisions, and make progress?

What projects can you start, steps can you take, results can you create?

And what’s one step you can take to make that happen right now?

Just like we want to begin to ask the right questions, we also want to being to take the right steps in the direction of the future we want to create.

The most transformative part of stepping into the unknown is that we can take the steps we want to take to create the future we want, even if we don’t know what every step will be right now. We can keep moving forward toward what we want. And we can start right now.

Tip 7: Connect To Your Community

When you’re charting your own course and going through something completely different than anything you’ve endured before, it can feel like you’re just going it alone.

So, be sure to connect with your tribe, whether they’re family, friends, or colleagues who “get it”. These people can support you throughout your most challenging adventures and you can do the same for them.
